Obituary of Andrew J. Patrick
The news of the death of A.J. Patrick received Monday morning, was
with universal regret. Since it was first know he had contracted
pneumonia, eager had been the inquiries each day as to the progress
of his battle with the dreaded disease for it was known that during
the Civil War while a federal soldier, he was shot from ambush, the
ball entering the left breast passing through the lung and body.
Twice before he had been able to withstand attacks of pneumonia but
his age and the old wound was too much, tho he struggled hard with
the disease. The best medical aid was given him, and all that kind
hands could do was done, but the balance was against him, and the
end came Monday morning when surrounded by his wife, three sons, a
daughter, other relatives and friends, his spirit took its flight to
a better world.
Andrew Jackson Patrick was born in Breathitt Co. Ky. Sept., 18,
1838, hence, was 68 years 5 months and 26 days old. When three years
of age, his parents moved to Arkansas, where he grew to manhood and
where he remained until about twelve years ago when he came to the
Indian Territory, and made his home six miles south of Catoosa,
until Oct. last year when he came to town. Mr. Patrick was twice
married, and the father of eight children. All of whom survive him.
Some were at a distance and word could not reach them in time to
come.
Thus ends the life of one who commanded the universal respect of all
associated with him. He had been a member of the I.O.O.F Lodge for a
number of years. And the funeral and burial was conducted by them.
The remains were interred at Duck Cemetery in Catoosa Wednesday
Afternoon.
Update: Below are letters written by, I believe, Mary (Bradburn)
Patrick's brother while he was a P.O.W in a Union prison camp. When
more precise information becomes available, I will post it here.
